    Silicones

Liquid error (sections/two-column-section-block line 452): invalid url input

Silicones, derived from silica, are an ingredient used within many skincare and haircare formulations.

Silicones feel silky and slippery, and, when used in skincare formulations, can fill small crevices so skin appears smoother. Silicones also offer other benefits, including the prevention of water loss and aiding in the healing of damaged skin. Their use in skincare has been subject to bad press in recent years, with claims they worsen acne and "suffocate" the skin, but neither of these claims have been substantiated. In fact, silicones are actually classed as non-comedogenic, and are used within some anti-acne products to help offset the drying these products can cause. Within haircare, silicone coats the hair shaft, reducing frizz and resulting in soft and silky hair. Overuse of certain silicones can inhibit other nourishing ingredients from penetrating the hair and may build up on the hair over time, resulting in a dull, flattened appearance. But overall silicones are considered safe and effective in skin and haircare.
