Petrolatum - or petroleum jelly - is an extremely commonly used occlusive (an ingredient that creates a barrier on your skin to prevent water loss).

It is naturally derived from crude oil and highly purified. Despite recent negative press, petrolatum is highly adept at replenishing, soothing and hydrating the skin's outer layer, and is generally well-tolerated and safe for topical use.
