As our skin is naturally acidic (with a pH level of about 5.5), in general, skincare products tend to be more acidic - helping to stimulate the skin to produce the elements it needs to stay healthy. Alkaline formulations may cause sensitization and allow bacteria to proliferate on the skin. There are emerging skincare brands that believe topical application of alkaline products can help stimulate the skin to ensure optimum cell function, however more research is needed in this area.
